Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is the medical term used to describe heartburn or reflux.
Many people suffer from GERD and can tell you that there is pain in their abdomen, the middle of their chest, neck and sometimes in the throat. At the same time many people are not aware of having GERD but have the symptoms of GERD. These symptoms are called Supra-esophageal, or Laryngo-pharyngeal Reflux Disease.
Symptoms of GERD
- Frequent clearing of the throat

- Sinus pressure and frequent sinus infections
- Frequent ear infections, ear pressure, Eustachian tube dysfunction, especially seen in infants and young children
- Nasal congestion, nasal blockage, snoring
- Frequent gagging, vomiting
- Cough
- Chest tightness or congestion in the chest
- Wheezing in the chest
- If you have asthma, untreated GERD will make the asthma harder to treat and control
