Medications costs are rising; even co-pay costs for medicine have increased. Comparing the costs of allergy injections to using medications, there is a significant cost savings in favor of receiving allergy injections.
The benefits can be permanent from receiving allergy injections and many times there is improved control of asthma, reduction in the frequency of sinus infections, ear infections, and at times there is an improvement in atopic dermatitis. In some studies, allergy injections have been shown to reduce the chances that an individual will develop asthma.
Allergy injections start to provide benefit after three months; at that time many patients are able to reduce the use of medications. After a while, medications are rarely needed to control the allergies. Medications do not provide any long-term benefit. After five years of medications, the patient will still need medications, however; after five years of allergy injections most patients are done with their allergies for life.
In our office, allergy injections are given once a week for 6 months. They are then given every other week for 6 months, spreading out to every third week, fourth week, etc. until the injections are given every six weeks.
You can start to see and feel the benefit of injections at 3 months. After 5 years of immunotherapy, a patient has completed the shot program. Ninety percent of adults are done with their allergies for life!
